With the new school year approaching, we wanted to highlight the latest Google Classroom updates to help you setup your teachers and students for success this year.
Provision classes ahead of time
As an administrator, you can provision Google Classroom classes before school starts, so your teachers can get to work right away with pre-created classes, instead of having to create classes and add students.
- One way to do this is with the updated Google School Directory Sync (SDS). SDS lets you synchronize data between your Student Information System and your Google for Education domain. With this latest update, SDS can now create Google Classroom classes from OneRoster CSV exports. You can then populate and update classes and class rosters. For more information and a brief tutorial, check out this video here.
- A number of Student Information Systems (SIS) directly integrate with Google Classroom to automatically create classes and populate rosters too. Check out this list to see if your SIS integrates with Classroom.
- Other options for provisioning classes include:
- Using Little SIS for Classroom, an app built by Amplified Labs, a Google for Education premier partner. Little SIS automates the setup and daily sync of classes, rosters, and guardian invites from district student information system (SIS) data.
- Using RosterSync, a free Google Sheets add-on built by CloudLab, a project of New Visions for Public Schools. RosterSync lets admins sync classes and rosters from Google Sheets.
- Using GAM, a command line tool that lets G Suite for Education admins manage domain and user settings quickly and easily. GAM can be used to create and manage classes, rosters, and guardians in Classroom.
Give teachers tools and resources to succeed
We recently launched a number of new Google Classroom features to address the most common feedback we’ve heard from teachers. From reordering course cards to providing a single view of student work, we’re excited about the new updates to Classroom this Back to School.
